TORONTO (BN) -- Two people are reported to have been detained after scuffling with Toronto police at a marijuana protest.

Police shut down the Canabian Day festival because organizers didn't have the proper permits.

However, a police spokesman says he has no information about any arrests.

Sergeant Joseph Gataveckas says police were just trying to keep the peace.

But protest organizer Marko Ivancicevic blames the violence on police -- adding his group is the victim of discrimination.

He says no one would provide insurance because it's a marijuana-based event.

He likens the arrests to the sentencing of another pot advocate last week in Saskatchewan.

Marc Emery -- president of the B.C. Marijuana Party -- was sentenced to 90 days in jail for passing a joint during a protest.

Similar protests were held Saturday in Hamilton and Niagara Falls.
